Begin with 1288.
On 6 January 1288, representatives of nine Vinodol communities gathered in Novi to set down the rules governing their relationship with the dukes of Krk. Written in Croatian using Glagolitic script, the Vinodol Code brings the history of the castle square into focus.
The surviving manuscript is a later copy, kept in Zagreb’s National and University Library. In Novi, the experience is the place itself: the castle, the square and the streets of a community whose concerns were written down more than seven centuries ago.

Towards the bell tower
Follow the lanes to the Church of St. Philip and James. Its white bell tower is a landmark from the water; from the streets, it becomes a way to orient yourself. Respect services and posted visiting arrangements.
The Mažuranić chapter
Three brothers born in Novi carried its name into Croatian public life: Ivan the poet and ban, Antun the linguist and Matija the travel writer. Their family house stands north of the castle square. View it from the street; do not assume public access.
Back to the waterfront
Return towards the sea and leave an hour unplanned. The contrast between enclosed lanes and the open waterfront is part of Novi’s character. Remember the uphill return when choosing where to stay.
